The San Jose Jazz Weekend International Festival returns to San Jose del Cabo on May 22 and 23. In its twelfth edition, the event will once again take place in the hotel zone in front of Plaza del Pescador, continuing a festival that has gradually become part of Los Cabos’ cultural calendar.

Over the last decade, the event has expanded from a local independent gathering into one of the most consistent live music events in Baja California Sur. Its programming combines jazz performances, gastronomy, visual arts, and community activities, drawing a mixed audience of residents, international visitors, and seasonal travelers.

The 2026 edition will feature 11 musical projects and more than 35 musicians. Cuban pianist Chuchito Valdes leads the lineup, bringing one of the festival’s highest-profile international bookings in recent years. Valdes belongs to one of the most recognized families in Afro-Cuban jazz and has received seven Grammy nominations throughout his career.

Other artists scheduled to perform include Alex Mercado Trio, Larry Ruiz Velasco Trio, Rita Donte, Baja Swing & Co Trio, Monique, Gama Quartet, German Nager, and The Diego Ramirez Trio, alongside B-Soul’s tribute to James Brown. The programming continues the festival’s emphasis on combining international jazz performers with Mexican and Baja California Sur-based musicians.

Expanded Programming Beyond the Main Stage

Artistic direction remains under drummer and producer Hernan Hecht for the second consecutive year. The Latin Grammy winner has helped shape the festival’s musical curation while expanding its collaborations and educational programming.

Several events connected to the festival will take place before and after the main weekend. Hotel El Ganzo will host conversations and performances centered on improvisation, while additional concerts are scheduled at Clandestinna and Bistro by Sebastien Agnes. These smaller performances have become part of the broader structure of the San Jose Jazz Weekend Festival, extending activity beyond the main stage.

Food and visual arts continue to play a central role in the festival’s programming. Participating restaurants and collaborators this year include Bistro, La Forchetta, La Mexicana, Spicy Tuna, Palmilla Social Club, Grupo Tres Gallos, and Baja Brewing, alongside guest appearances from chef Aarón Mizrahi and other culinary projects from Los Cabos.

The festival will also include live ceramic work by Jaznum Fragoso Bishop, installations by Aurora Covarrubias, and a collective art garden featuring more than 20 artists. Organizers will again incorporate children’s activities and fundraising efforts in collaboration with the youth organization Soñar Despierto. Together, these elements reinforce the event’s broader focus on community participation and multidisciplinary cultural programming.

The growth of events like the San Jose Jazz Weekend International Festival reflects broader changes taking place across Los Cabos. While the region remains associated internationally with resorts, beaches, golf, and sport fishing, cultural programming has become a larger part of the destination’s identity. Festival organizers estimate that an increasing share of visitors are actively seeking experiences tied to live music, gastronomy, and local culture.
