During the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur’s (UABCS) 2025-2026 Academic and Administrative Report, Rector Dante Arturo Salgado González confirmed that the university will establish a School of Medicine in Los Cabos. Once it opens, it will be the first public institution in the state to offer a medical degree — until now, students have had to look outside the state’s public university system to obtain one.

The decision to locate the school in Los Cabos reflects the municipality’s growth. The campus will be built adjacent to the new 260-bed Regional General Hospital currently under development by the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). The adjacency links medical education to clinical practice from day one.

Students will train in a modern hospital environment and have the opportunity to complete much of their education within the community they may one day serve. As healthcare infrastructure expands across the south of the state, the school is a direct investment in the professionals who will staff it.

From Vision to Project

The initiative stems from a collaboration between UABCS and the Los Cabos City Council, which first announced plans for the school earlier this year. In the months since, the project has moved from announcement to schematic: a site secured, an architectural concept presented.

The plot — three hectares donated by Ángel Salvador Ceseña — sits adjacent to the future IMSS hospital. The architectural concept envisions a purpose-built facility with classrooms, laboratories, and administrative spaces, with room to grow as enrollment does.

Strengthening Healthcare Through Education

The announcement builds on a broader expansion of healthcare infrastructure in Los Cabos. In recent years, the region opened its first Community Blood Bank and has been adding specialized medical services. The School of Medicine addresses the remaining gap: a region building out its clinical capacity, now with an institution to train the physicians who will work in it.
