Universal Studios is reportedly heading to Los Cabos through a new hotel and entertainment project planned for the Cabo San Lucas Marina.
The news comes from developer Eduardo Sanchez Navarro, who recently shared plans for a Universal Studios-led hotel as part of The Place at Cabo, a mixed-use development overlooking the marina. While many details have yet to be released, the project is being presented as an entertainment destination built around live shows and performances.
One of the main features announced so far is a theater with a capacity for around 1,500 guests. According to reports, the venue would host concerts, productions, and other live entertainment, giving visitors a reason to spend time in the marina beyond its restaurants, shops, and nightlife.
Universal has not yet released a public statement about the project, and details about the hotel’s design, room count, opening timeline, and entertainment programming have not been made public.
The Place at Cabo and What’s Next
The project would form part of The Place at Cabo, a development on one of the most recognizable properties in Cabo San Lucas. Long before it carried that name, the unfinished structure overlooking the marina was known locally as the “Grey Ghost,” a concrete building that sat vacant for decades on one of the city’s most valuable waterfront sites.
Construction began more than 30 years ago but stalled during the economic troubles of the early 1990s. The structure then sat empty for decades, a fixture of the marina skyline.
In 2022, Grupo Questro took on the site under the name The Place at Cabo. The redevelopment runs in phases. The first opened commercial spaces and open-air restaurants along the marina walkway, as well as a tourist tram.
The second produced the Discovery Center Los Cabos, an immersive museum on the ecosystems of the Gulf of California, now open to the public.
The Universal Hotel and Theater would be the most prominent piece revealed so far.
Several details remain unknown. No opening date has been announced, and the scope of Universal’s involvement has not been confirmed beyond the details shared during the developer’s presentation.
