The Cape, a Thompson Hotel, celebrates its 10th anniversary this summer with the return of Switching Gears. This signature event brings together extraordinarily talented people from around the world, like surfers, cyclists, chefs, musicians, and creators, for four days of multidisciplinary experiences. Here, everyone is encouraged to switch roles: surfers hop on mountain bikes, pickleball pros paddle out into the waves, and chefs and DJs become part of the action.
Now in its 5th edition, Switching Gears has become a reflection of the Los Cabos lifestyle. It is a fusion of adventure, creativity, and community that mirrors the very DNA of The Cape, a Thompson Hotel.
“Switching Gears was born from a simple idea: changing the usual way we did things,” says Eduardo Segura, General Manager of the hotel. “It started as a way to step out of routine and into a mindset of creativity, collaboration, and play. Now, as we celebrate 10 years of The Cape, this event has become an authentic expression of who we are.”
This year’s edition expands further with the addition of pickleball alongside its core disciplines: surfing, mountain biking, gastronomy, and music. It’s much more than a tournament or a festival. It’s a creative playground where boundaries between disciplines dissolve.
The Surf Element: A Community Platform
Surf culture remains at the heart of the event. Alongside the playful Wheel of Shred, where surfers spin a wheel to select a random board and take on the waves, Switching Gears hosts the State Surf Tournament of Baja California Sur, an open competition for all ages and a key platform for local athletes.
It’s a world-class event, but it’s also intensely local,” says Alejandro Gonzalez, Technical Director of the Baja California Sur Surf Association. “It creates opportunities for the next generation. We run clinics and mini-tournaments, bringing young surfers into contact with some of the top talent in the sport. Just being part of this community is already a win.

Saturday, July 5
Morning: Surf Safari in the East Cape + opening of the State Surf Tournament in Monuments Beach.
Evening: Collaborative dinner with Enrique Olvera (Manta) and Eduardo García (Maximo Bistrot), followed by a party with Pare de Sufrir and Bar de la O at Sunken Bar.
Sunday, July 6
Morning: State Surf Tournament Finals.
Brunch at The Ledge with Chef Edgar Roman.
Afternoon: Closing Ceremony of Surf Tournament, followed by Pickleball Challenge at Glimpse.
Open to the Public
All events are open to the public as spectators, including the surf tournaments, biking, and pickleball. Additionally, guests can purchase access to dinners, cocktail events, and parties throughout the weekend. Special rates are available for residents.
