The landscape of specialized healthcare in Baja California Sur reached a significant milestone with the inauguration of the Teletón Children’s Rehabilitation Center (CRIT) in Los Cabos.
Opened on November 25, 2025, in San Jose del Cabo, this facility marks the 27th CRIT in Mexico and, notably, the first in the country to be funded entirely through private donations.
This new center will provide essential rehabilitation and inclusion services to hundreds of children and adolescents annually, drastically reducing the strain on families who previously had to travel for hours to access specialized care at the CRIT located in La Paz.
The Inauguration: A Symbol of Collective Will
The inauguration ceremony was a testament to collaboration, bringing together federal, state, and municipal authorities, community leaders, and a wide array of philanthropic and business allies.
The event highlighted the power of cross-sector cooperation in addressing critical gaps in public services. The ceremony included the emotional moment of presenting the first patient credentials, officially marking the start of the center’s mission to transform lives.
The celebration concluded with a performance by Aída Cuevas, accompanied by the Mariachi Mexico es Herencia, adding a traditional cultural flourish to the historic occasion.
The center itself, with an architectural design that evokes the local Biznaga flower, represents a commitment to ensuring that every person with a disability can develop fully and have real opportunities.
A Groundbreaking Funding Model
The establishment of CRIT Los Cabos is particularly significant given its unique funding structure. It was made possible through an alliance between the Teletón Foundation and a coalition of private philanthropic organizations, including the El Dorado & Chileno Bay Foundation, Los Cabos Children’s Foundation, and the Los Cabos Community Alliance.
This privately financed model, which required US$9.5 million for construction costs and an additional US$5 million secured to fund operations for five years, reflects a growing trend in the region.
Private wealth and community leadership have converged to build durable social infrastructure, a practical response to the service gap that has often lagged behind the rapid economic growth of Los Cabos.
This approach creates foundational community-wide systems that serve the general public regardless of background or resources.
Addressing a Critical Regional Need
For years, Los Cabos families requiring specialized care for neuromusculoskeletal disabilities faced a complex reality: long, expensive, and time-consuming travel to the regional CRIT in La Paz. These trips strained household budgets and took time away from work and community life.
With the capacity to serve approximately 500 families each year, the CRIT Los Cabos directly mitigates this logistical and financial burden. The center provides comprehensive services, including physical, occupational, and speech therapy, as well as crucial psychological and social support for patients and their families.
Furthermore, the commitment from private donors has been structured to include operational funding for several years, ensuring long-term stability and impact in the community.
The new CRIT anchors a developing children’s medical campus in the region, signaling a profound shift in focus from short-term charitable aid to foundational, long-term investments that strengthen the entire social fabric of Los Cabos.
